Rob Cox - Photographer

While I deliberately avoid confining myself to any one genre I tend to concentrate on landscapes because Sugarloaf Rock doesn't care if its bum looks big or whether its hair is fetching in profile - it just is. Based in Western Australia's South-West region I'm most at home in the remote Australian outback, and the desert in particular.

My aerial work explores the power of shadow in articulating natural patterns, structural features, sculptural subtleties and fine textural details in the landscape. It also invites the viewer to consider the uncomfortable paradox that some of the most striking abstractions are the result of environmental mismanagement, like salt lakes in once productive agricultural areas, and the toxic byproducts of commercial mining operations, like the vivid colours swirling across the surface of a tailings pond.

The landscape should always speak for itself, and I use a streamlined workflow developed over many years to keep retouching to a minimum, but post-processing is integral to the interpretation of an image. In the same way a painter sketches a scene then takes it back to the studio and draws on the memories of that moment to bring it to life over many hours at the easel, so the photographer works to translate their unique experience of a landscape for the viewer.

Those who dismiss post-processing as creative heresy fail to appreciate the many hours, days, sometimes decades the great pioneers of photography spent in the darkroom interpreting, re-interpreting and refining their iconic work. In the digital age we can achieve all this in a fraction of the time without the endless repetition and all the chemicals.

For me, the essential element in any image is energy, whether it's the energy of the subject in a dynamic portrait or the environmental energy in a landscape; whether it's explicit in movement, or implicit in mood.

In the words of Ansel Adams: You don't take a photograph, you make it.
